Gamil Ratib, one of the most iconic Egyptian actors, passed away on Sep. 18, 2018, leaving behind a legacy of memorable roles.
His work has inspired generations of actors. The subtle genius of his hit TV series "Wanis Family" has left a distinctive mark on the Arab world.
Born on 28 November 1926 in Cairo, Ratib was sent to study arts in Paris, where he married a French woman and was given French citizenship.
He was a recipient of France’s Legion of Honour in 1995 for 59 years of exceptional work in cinema and film.
In a career that spanned 65 years, Ratib starred in both French and Egyptian films and made his first appearance in the 1945 film “I Am the East.”
In the early 1950s, he joined "La Comédie-Française," one of the most popular theaters in the world.
In Egypt, the late actor is known for his notable roles in a number of TV series such as “Yawmiat Wanees,” “El-Raya al-Bayda,” “Al-Asdekaa,” and “Wajh El-Qamar.”
He also featured in Tunisian cinema and took part in many distinguished international movies, most famously the 1962 Oscar-winning “Lawrence of Arabia.”
The acclaimed actor passed away on September 18 at the age of 92.
