Today (Jan. 15) marks the first birth anniversary of actor-comedian Samir Ghanem since his untimely demise in May 2021 due to Coronavirus.

In a career spanning four decades, Ghanem worked with all leading stars of even today’s times which includes Ashraf Abdel Baki, Leblba, Sohair Ramzi, and many more.

Ghanem’s comedies were packed with social messages and one-liners that are still afresh in the minds of the audience.

In his comedy tracks, he talked about globalization issues, caste oppression and equality, and the folly of superstitions, all while not being preachy.

Born in January 1937 in Al-ʿAtawlah, Asyut province, he received his BA from the Agriculture Department at Alexandria University in the 1960s.

Ghanem was a member of 'Tholathy Adwa'a El-Masrah,' the 1960s standup comedy trio, with George Sidhom and El Deif Ahmed.

His first breakthrough came with his role in the popular play “EL-Motzawgein” (The Married Couples).

Ghanem is known for starring in shows such as (Goha Rules the City), ‘Faris wa Bani Khayban’ (The Knight and Disaster Clan), ‘Akhuya Hayes wana Layes’ (Happy Is My Brother, Lost Am I), ‘Ana wal-Nizam wa Hawak’ (Me, the Government and Your Love), ‘Bahloul fi Istanbul’ (Bahloul in Istanbul) and ‘Ana wa Mirati wa Monica’ (Me, My Wife and Monica).

Ghanem received numerous awards during his long-standing career, including the Faten Hamama Honorary and Excellence Award during the Cairo International Film Festival, as a testament to the vital role he has played in the film scene and his immense contribution to Egyptian cinema.
