Egyptian-American Rami Malek has signed on to star in 20th Century's thriller movie "Amateur".
British novelist and popular historian James Hawes is directing the movie from a script by Gary Spinelli. Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson are producing, with Malek executive producing.
The plot follows a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.
While no start date has been set, Malek has been eyeing several projects as his potential next movie with this being a strong contender now that a director is attached.
He recently wrapped production on the Christopher Nolan thriller "Oppenheimer", which bows this July.
The movie features Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife Katherine. Oppenheimer, a physicist who was integral to the Manhattan Project, is known as the father of the atomic bomb.
Malek is set to portray a scientist, although it is not clear who he will be playing.
Meanwhile, Pugh is set to play Jean Tatlock, who had an affair with Oppenheimer and was a member of the Community Party of the United States and Safdie will portray Edward Teller, a member of the Manhattan Project and a Hungarian physicist who is considered the father of the hydrogen bomb.
Despite plot details being kept under wraps, the story is expected to dramatize the creation of the nuclear weapon.
Rami was also recently set to produce and star in the Buster Keaton limited series for Warner Bros TV.
