President Abdel Fattah El Sisi extended his sincere condolences to Qatar following the death of the country's former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

In a statement posted on his official social media accounts on Sunday, President El Sisi expressed his sympathies to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Qatari government, and the Qatari people over the passing of the former ruler.

"I extend my heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathies to the brotherly State of Qatar, its Emir, government, and people, on the passing of the late His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," the president said.

El-Sisi prayed for the late former emir, asking God to grant him His vast mercy and eternal peace.

"We pray to Almighty God to envelop him in His boundless mercy and to continue blessing Qatar and its people with security and stability. Indeed, to God we belong and to Him we shall return," he added.

Earlier on Sunday, Qatar's Amiri Diwan announced the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who ruled the country from 1995 until handing over power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013.
