PM Visits Oman to Offer Condolences Over Sultan Qaboos’s Death

Egypt’s Prime Minister (PM) Moustafa Madbouli left for Oman on Sunday, heading a ministerial delegation to express their condolences over the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The delegation includes Justice Minister Chancellor Omar Marwan, Endowments Minister Dr. Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, Minister of Planning and Administrative Reform Dr. Hala Al Saeed, and Antiquities Minister Dr. Khaled Al Anany.

It is worth mentioning that Qaboos passed away on Saturday at the age of 79 after 50 years in power. The state media reported that he died on Friday evening.

“With the hearts of believers in God’s decree and his destiny, with great sorrow and great grief mixed with complete consent and absolute submission to the command of God, the Diwan of the forgotten royal court, God Almighty, mourns the presence of His Majesty His Majesty Sultan Qaboos,”  according to Oman’s news agency.

Moreover, the Egyptian presidency issued a statement yesterday, mourning the death of Oman's Sultan.

“President Abdel Fattah El Sisi mourns the death of a brother and a friend, and expresses his deep sorrow and sincere condolences to the brotherly Omani people on the demise of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos,” the statement said.

“Egypt and its people will never forget Sultan Qaboos’s fraternal and strong positions, may God have mercy on him,” the statement added.

Oman has named, on Saturday, Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, 65, as the country’s new ruler to succeed his cousin Sultan Qaboos.

Haitham bin Tariq held several positions in the Sultan, he is one of Sultan Qaboos’s close associates and envoy, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Main Committee for the Future Vision “Oman 2040. He also served as the secretary general for the ministry of foreign affairs, and undersecretary of the ministry of foreign affairs.

He also served as the head of the Omani Football Association from 1983 till 1986 and chaired the organizing committee of the 2nd Asian Beach Games in Muscat in 2010.

He assumed the position of Minister of Heritage and Culture from February 2002 until January 11, 2020.
