Egypt Declares 3-Day Mourning

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi ordered to declare a three-day mourning period in Egypt following the death of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said, presidency spokesperson Bassam Rady said.

The Egyptian presidency issued a statement, this morning, in which it mourned the death of Sultan Qaboos.

“President Abdel Fattah El Sisi mourns the death of a brother and a friend, and expresses his deep sorrow and sincere condolences to the brotherly Omani people on the demise of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos,” the statement said.

“Egypt and its people will never forget Sultan Qaboos’s fraternal and strong positions, may God have mercy on him,” the statement added.

Noteworthy, Oman’s state media reported, in a statement, that Sultan Qaboos has died on Friday evening; the Diwan of Royal Court confirmed his death. He has passed away at the age of 79 after nearly more than four decades in power

Oman has named, on Saturday, Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, 65 years old, as the country’s new ruler to succeed his cousin Sultan Qaboos.

Haitham bin Tariq held several positions in the Sultan, he is one of Sultan Qaboos’s close associates and envoy, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Main Committee for the Future Vision “Oman 2040. He also served as the secretary general for the ministry of foreign affairs, and undersecretary of the ministry of foreign affairs.

He also served as the head of the Omani Football Association from 1983 till 1986 and chaired the organizing committee of the 2nd Asian Beach Games in Muscat in 2010.

He assumed the position of Minister of Heritage and Culture from February 2002 until January 11, 2020.
