Oscar winner Cillian Murphy is returning as the fearsome gangster Thomas Shelby in a “Peaky Blinders” movie at Netflix.

Directed by Tom Harper and written by series creator Steven Knight, "The Immortal Man: A Peaky Blinders Film," the long-awaited next chapter in Shelby's story, will follow the character during World War II.

In addition to Murphy, the upcoming film features a host of new and returning actors, including Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, Stephen Graham, Tim Roth, Ned Dennehy, and Packy Lee, among others.

Previously believed to be arriving in late 2025, the film's release date has yet to be officially announced.

While the specific release date remains unknown, The Observer now reveals that The Immortal Man will arrive on Netflix at sometime next year.

Murphy, who finished filming the movie last December, tells the publication that he hasn't fully processed his Shelby return just yet.

In fact, the actor has only just realized how large a role the character has played in his life. He said: "I did work out that I’ve been playing the character for a quarter of my life, which is kind of mad."

Murphy also discusses why he chose to return after previously expressing fondness for the TV show's ending, teasing that the movie serves as a true conclusion to his character's journey.

“Because we got a really good script, and I have a sense of duty to the fans because, in many ways, they made the show the success that it is,” he noted. “It’s a proper bookend to the whole 36 hours of television.”

It's not clear why The Immortal Man is taking so long to release given it wrapped up filming more than a year ago, but this isn't necessarily a cause for concern.

The timeline for Netflix movies from filming to release can be on the longer side. Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein", for example, finished filming in October 2024 and it's releasing this November.

Given the conclusion of production in December 2024, it seems likely that the follow-up to the Peaky Blinders season 6 ending will arrive in the first half of the year.

If The Immortal Man is to be the end for Tommy, the world of the crime show is still set to live on. Netflix has revealed that two Peaky Blinders spinoff shows are in development, including one set in Boston and one that serves as a prequel for Polly.

Peaky Blinders season 6 was released in early 2022, meaning by the time The Immortal Man arrives on screens, it may have been over four years since audiences last saw Tommy Shelby. This time gap could actually benefit the story and character, as season 6 ends things in 1934 and the movie will seemingly pick the story back up in either 1939 or the early 1940s.

It remains to be seen how The Immortal Man compares to previous seasons of Peaky Blinders, but Murphy's comments about the script are reassuring, and Knight's involvement is another positive sign.
