An “Outlander” prequel series is in development at Starz.

The show executive producer and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is set to return as a writer and executive producer of the prequel.

A writers’ room is currently being assembled to begin work in the coming weeks.

The plot details for what the prequel would focus on are being kept under wraps.

Ronald D. Moore, who developed “Outlander” for television, will also executive produce alongside Maril Davis under their Tall Ship Production company.

Sony Pictures Television will also produce the prequel. Roberts is currently under an overall deal at Sony.

“Outlander“ is based on the long-running novel series by Diana Gabaldon.

The show currently has five seasons and has been renewed for a sixth season. Each season tackles a book from the novel series.

"Outlander" Season 6 will premiere on March 6, 2022, at 9 PM ET across all of the network’s platforms, returning with an extended episode and airing day and date in the UK for the first time via STARZPLAY.

The new season is set to pick up where Season 5 left off after Claire (Caitríona Balfe) escaped a violent encounter with Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and returned to Fraser’s Ridge.

It will focus on the threat of the Revolutionary War as it looms over Claire and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) lives, forcing them to choose what is best for their family.

The sixth season is adapted from “A Breath of Snow and Ashes”, the sixth book in the Outlander series.
