Wildfires in Canada's Ontario province have expanded to 735,000 hectares, with 190 active blazes still burning, Premier Doug Ford said on Monday.

Ford said around 1,800 people have been evacuated from remote communities in northwestern Ontario, pledging that authorities would do everything possible to contain the fires and protect residents.

While air quality has improved across much of Ontario and the northeastern US, unhealthy conditions persist in parts of the American Midwest after smoke from the fires spread across the border.

The wildfires have also fueled political tensions, with US President Donald Trump urging Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to intensify firefighting efforts after smoke affected air quality in several US states.

Climate experts say rising temperatures have increased wildfire risks in Canada by drying forests and creating conditions for larger and more frequent fires.
