UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany welcomed Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman to the organization's headquarters in Paris, describing the visit as a milestone that reinforces cooperation in cultural heritage, education and sustainable development.
El-Enany said the visit marked the first by an Omani sultan to UNESCO since 1989 and the first by an Arab head of state since he assumed office as director-general. Sultan Haitham reaffirmed Oman's commitment to supporting UNESCO's mission and promoting dialogue, coexistence and sustainable development.
UNESCO highlighted Oman's contributions to heritage preservation, including its five World Heritage Sites, support for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, and environmental initiatives. The organization also noted Oman's growing role in education through UNESCO Chairs, its recent ratification of the 1960 Convention against Discrimination in Education, and cooperation in research, innovation and climate resilience, describing the visit as a new chapter in the long-standing partnership.
