A massive oil spill near Kharg Island has blackened the once-pristine beaches of Shidvar Island, often dubbed the “Maldives of Iran,” raising concerns over one of the region’s most significant environmental disasters in recent years.

The spill, located near Iran’s most important oil export hub, is estimated to have contaminated more than 45,000 square kilometers of water. Analysts estimate that around 80,000 barrels of oil may have leaked, although the exact cause remains unclear.

Environmental experts say the disaster highlights deeper problems within Iran’s aging oil infrastructure, pointing to years of underinvestment, inadequate maintenance, and mismanagement.

Images of oil-covered coastlines have spread widely online, showing severe damage to a region known for its white-sand beaches and ecological importance.

Experts warn that pollution in the Arabian Gulf could have long-lasting consequences because the semi-enclosed body of water has limited circulation, allowing contaminants to remain for years.

The spill has intensified concerns over the environmental cost of regional conflict and the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure.
