North Korea has approved measures to expand its nuclear forces "in both scale and capability" as leader Kim Jong-un called for a broader modernization of the country's military, state media reported.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the decisions were made during an expanded meeting of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party on Thursday.
Kim said North Korea's security and what he described as "genuine peace" could only be achieved by building a powerful military capable of countering all threats.
The meeting also approved plans to modernize military infrastructure, upgrade the technical capabilities of combat systems, expand and strengthen the country's nuclear forces, and standardize and modernize military bases.
