Nicole Kidman has filed for divorce from Keith Urban after 19 years of marriage, bringing an end to a long union that brought together two superstars from the worlds of movies and music.

The 58-year-old Oscar-winning actress petitioned on Tuesday to end her marriage to the 57-year-old Grammy-winning country singer in a Nashville court.

The documents state the celebrity power couple has undergone “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences”.

Kidman and Urban began living apart in early summer, with Urban moving out of the family home in Nashville, Tennessee, and acquiring his own residence in the country music capital.

The acclaimed actress was opposed to splitting up and has been fighting to keep the marriage intact.

The filings include a marriage dissolution and childcare plan agreed on by the couple and submitted for a judge’s approval.

“The mother and father will behave with each other and each child so as to provide a loving, stable, consistent and nurturing relationship with the child even though they are divorced,” says the permanent parenting plan, using language common in the state’s divorces. “They will not speak badly of each other or the members of the family of the other parent. They will encourage each child to continue to love the other parent and be comfortable in both families.”

The plan asks that Kidman be the primary residential parent to the couple’s two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, ages 17 and 14, having them for 306 days per year with Urban taking them for the other 59.

The girls have lived in Nashville all their lives and the documents do not indicate that will change.

The filing states that each parent, who launched their respective careers in Australia and holds dual U.S. and Australian citizenship, earns more than $100,000 per month and neither will need childcare or spousal support.

The marriage dissolution plan lays out a roughly equal division of joint assets, with each keeping all the assets that are in their name, including the copyrights and royalties for their artistic work.

The detailed agreement suggests that the divorce had been underway for well over a month at least. Urban signed the parenting plan on 29 August, Kidman on 6 September.

It will take at least 90 days for the divorce to become final under Tennessee law.

Both raised in Australia, Kidman and Urban met in 2005 at the G’Day USA gala in Los Angeles, an event promoting their shared home country of Australia.

They went public with their engagement a little over a year later before marrying in Sydney in June 2006.

The marriage was the first for Urban and the second for Kidman, who was married to Hollywood actor Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001. The two share two children, Bella and Connor.

The couple have been a regular fixture on red carpets over the past 20 years, including recent appearances at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May 2025 and were spotted in Nashville in June watching the Los Angeles Football Club play a game during the FIFA Club World Cup.

Kidman and Urban celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in June. The musician

marked the occasion by posting on Instagram a black-and-white photo of the couple embracing along with the caption: “Happy Anniversary Baby.”

The couple had publicly but lovingly described some marital difficulties, but there were still few if any signs they were headed for divorce. Media reports of their separation came just a day before the divorce filing.

Last year at the premiere of the Netflix series “The Perfect Couple,” Kidman told the Associated Press the term didn’t apply to her and Urban.

A few months earlier, Urban paid tribute to Kidman, and brought her to tears, when she received the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award at a Hollywood gala in 2024.

During the speech, Urban recounted in his tribute speech how much of a positive influence she was on his life when they met and went on to credit her as being integral to his rehabilitation and sobriety.

“Four months into a marriage, I’m in rehab for three months,” Urban said. “I had no idea what was going to happen to us … and if you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl. Nic pushed through every negative voice, I’m sure even some of her own, and she chose love. And here we are tonight, 18 years later.”

“She’s raw, but resilient; she’s serious and a complete goofball. She also has a bit of a mantra, ‘Choose love.,” he added at the time. “She has the capacity to love like no one I’ve ever met.”

Kidman was ranked as the highest-paid actress in the world by Forbes in 2024. She won the Oscar for best actress in 2003 for her performance in “The Hours” and has been nominated on four other occasions.

The acclaimed actress has remained a powerhouse in both film and TV, with recent credits including “Big Little Lies,” “Babygirl,” “Nine Perfect Strangers,” “Being the Ricardos” and “The Perfect Couple.”

Urban is a country singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the U.S. in the early aughts. He has won four Grammy Awards and 15 Academy of Country Music Awards. Urban has released 11 studio albums and served as a judge for three seasons on “American Idol.” The signer has been on tour in recent months, with his next engagement scheduled for Thursday in Hershey, Pa.
