Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock to Return for "Practical Magic 2"

Nicole Kidman is set to reprise her role as Gillian Owens in a sequel to 1998’s "Practical Magic".

Earlier this week, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman were in talks to return for "Practical Magic 2", a sequel to Warner Bros‘ romantic fantasy.

Akiva Goldsman, who penned the original film with Robin Swicord and Adam Brooks, will return to write the screenplay. Bullock and Kidman are expected to produce.

In an interview with People, Kidman took the rumors further, confirming her role and saying Bullock will also return as Gillian’s older sister, Sally.

“Yes, I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that,” she said. “There’s a lot more to tell, which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’ [We] found a way in.”

No plot details on the sequel have been given. The original film follows the women from the Owens family, a group of magically inclined, spellcasting ladies who are blessed with the supernatural gift but cursed by their matriarch. After being abandoned by her lover, pregnant and alone, Maria Owens cast a spell upon herself that she would never again feel the agony of love.

As her bitterness grew, the spell turned into a curse. A curse on any man who dared love an Owens woman. Enter Bullock and Kidman, two sisters hellbent on breaking that curse and freeing themselves from a lifetime of malicious gossip from their townsfolk.

The witchy Owens sisters' lives are thrown into chaos when they get wrapped in a supernatural coverup after Bullock (unintentionally) drugs and kills Kidman’s abusive ex-boyfriend (Goran Višnjić) forcing them to reanimate his corpse leading to her sister being possessed by him.

Directed by Griffin Dunne and adapted from the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, the original movie stands as a beloved, spooky season staple for people who love the cast or are really into crystals.

Fans began buzzing about the future of “Practical Magic” on Sunday when an announcement was made at midnight on TikTok — a nod to the “midnight margaritas” scene from the first movie — however, the big news was saved for Monday morning, when it was revealed that “Practical Magic 2” was officially in the works.

In 2019, HBO Max was pursuing a “Practical Magic” spinoff series, “Rules of Magic,” based on Hoffman’s prequel novel, but it eventually disappeared into the Hollywood ether, but the fandom lives on.
