Blumhouse–Atomic Monster and Paramount Pictures are teaming up on a new entry in the $900 million-grossing franchise "Paranormal Activity".
The new installment will be co-financed and co-produced by Paramount and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, with Paramount handling worldwide distribution.
While plot details are being kept closely under wraps, the project is moving forward as priority development for all parties.
James Wan, a horror titan who launched the similarly successful “The Conjuring” franchise, joins the “Paranormal Activity” universe as a producer.
Wan will produce on behalf of Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, with Oren Peli — who created the original “Paranormal Activity” — producing for Solana Films.
“I’ve been a huge admirer of ‘Paranormal Activity’ since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying,” said Wan in a statement. “I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found footage franchise.”
Jason Blum also returns to produce, alongside Steven Schneider, who will executive produce for Room 101, Inc.
“Diving in with James’ for this exciting rebirth of the franchise that started it all for Blumhouse is exactly what we dreamed of when we merged with Atomic Monster. I’ll be actively involved with him to introduce this new chapter,” Blum said about bringing the hit franchise back to life. “Thankfully, we’re able to spend a little more than the $15,000 we had on the first movie, but one thing will remain the same – do not see it alone.”
That first film, 2007’s “Paranormal Activity,” grossed nearly $194 million worldwide.
The horror franchise has since expanded to include seven installments, including 2010’s “Paranormal Activity 2,” 2011’s “Paranormal Activity 3,” 2012’s “Paranormal Activity 4,” 2014’s “The Marked Ones,” 2015’s “The Ghost Dimension,” and 2021’s “Next of Kin.”
“We’re thrilled to reignite the iconic ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise with two of the horror genre’s most visionary talents, James and Jason,” said Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg. “Jason’s role in shaping this franchise into a global cultural touchstone, together with James’s singular taste and track record for innovative storytelling, sets the stage for a thrilling new chapter.”
Michael Clear and Judson Scott will serve as executive producers on the new movie for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, with Alayna Glasthal as the executive overseeing for the company.
