Pixar has released the official trailer for “Inside Out 2”, the sequel to 2015’s animated coming-of-age movie “Inside Out”.
The first movie centered on 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and the five emotions in her brain, led by a star-studded cast: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader) and Anger (Lewis Black).
In “Inside Out,” after moving from Minnesota to San Francisco, Riley fails to adjust well to her new surroundings. Coupled with the turbulent experience of growing up, she finds herself in dire emotional straits and eventually risks losing not only her friends but also her family altogether.
The movie follows Joy and Sadness embarking on an adventure through Riley’s mind, where they must figure out how to work together to make Riley settle into her new home and come to terms with the many emotions she’s feeling.
Back when it was first released, “Inside Out” received glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike, even receiving the 2016 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The sequel was first announced in 2022 at Disney’s D23 Expo. Kelsey Mann directs, while Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote the first film, serves as writer for the second movie as well.
It picks up after the events of the first movie and will see the return of the familiar emotions in Riley's mind that were seen in the pic, alongside new ones for her to experience as the young girl gets older.
The sequel was previously announced that Anxiety would be one new emotion introduced in "Inside Out 2", and the character is voiced by Maya Hawke (Stranger Things).
The new footage has introduced other new cast members including Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as the voice of Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos (Elemental) as the voice of Ennui, and Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird) as the voice of Embarrassment.
Anxiety is described as a bundle of frazzled energy [who] enthusiastically ensures Riley's prepared for every possible negative outcome.
Envy may be small but she sure knows what she wants. She’s perpetually jealous of everything everyone else has, and she’s not afraid to pine over it.
Meanwhile, Ennui represents teenage apathy as a character who is bored and lethargic with a well-practiced eye-roll, and embarrassment likes to lay low, which isn’t easy for this burly guy with a bright blush-pink complexion.
Kensington Tallman is voicing Riley Anderson, taking over the role from Kaitlyn Dias. Another new character is Valentina "Val" Ortiz, a hockey player admired by Riley and her friends; Lilimar (Cleopatra and Friends) voices the role.
Yvette Nicole Brown voices Coach Roberts, the head of a summer hockey camp. Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan are back as the voices of Riley's parents, while Sumayyah Nuridden-Green and Grace Lu voice Riley's best friends.
The starring emotions voices include Amy Poehler as Joy, Lewis Black as Anger, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust.
Kelsey Mann directed the pic, which was produced by Mark Nielsen. Other cast members include Sarayu Blue, Flea, Ron Funches, Dave Goelz, James Austin Johnson, Bobby Moynihan, Frank Oz, Paula Pell, Paula Poundstone, John Ratzenberger, Kendall Coyne Schofield, June Squibb, Kirk Thatcher, and Yong Yea.
The official synopsis for the sequel reads, "Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone."
"Inside Out 2" is set to release in theaters on June 14, almost nine years after the first movie.
