Greta Gerwig's film adaptation of popular C.S. Lewis tales "Narnia" is getting a two-week Imax global run in 90 countries across 1,000 auditoriums in advance of the pic’s drop on Netflix.
“Narnia” is currently slated to open in Imax on Thanksgiving Day 2026. It will premiere on Netflix at Christmas of the same year.
In 2018, Netflix announced had acquired the movie and TV rights to "The Chronicles of Narnia" book series.
In 2020, the giant streamer enlisted Gerwig, who has been nominated for an Oscar for directing “Lady Bird” and also oversaw an acclaimed adaptation of “Little Women.” Her star only continued to climb in the ensuing years. In 2023, Gerwig directed “Barbie,” which was the year’s highest-grossing film, earning nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and becoming a bright pink phenomenon.
Gerwig is helming the first two movies, who will be adapting a fantasy series for the first time in her career.
The Chronicles of Narnia is a beloved children’s fantasy novel series that holds many Christian allegories throughout.
It has last seen the big screen treatment with 2010’s "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader".
“Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.” Said Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos at the time.
In total, the seven Narnia books have sold over 115 million copies and been translated into 57 languages worldwide. Netflix hopes the films will become its next major franchise.
Since the 2018 acquisition, the streamer has yet to announce any projects based on the beloved book series.
Netflix has long talked about franchise ambitions and has been collecting IP to bolster those efforts, including acquiring the Roald Dahl Story Company. The streamer released a movie musical adaptation of Dahl’s "Matilda" and Wes Anderson's adaptation of the author’s "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar".
