Netflix has unveiled a new teaser for the long-awaited sophomore season of the Korean blockbuster dystopian show “Squid Game". The footage comes as the final reveal of the streamer’s annual Geeked Week fan event.

The teaser picks things off right after Season 1’s finale, when Seong Gi-hun abandoned his plans to go to the U.S. and instead started a daring chase with a newfound motive.

In the short clip, he appears back in his 456 uniform amid a crowd of new contestants. Another massive cash prize awaits them, with a quick look at the games to come.

The globally successful series follows financially struggling individuals competing in deadly games for a chance to win a life-changing prize, revealing the dark depths of human desperation and resilience.

Season 2 takes place three years after Gi-hun wins Squid Game, giving up on going to the States and coming back with a new resolution in his mind. He once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.

The second season sees Lee Jung-Jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo reprise their roles as survivors of the bloody elimination game.

Joining the cast of the show for its second installment are Yim Si-wan (“The Attorney,” “Emergency Declaration”), Kang Ha-neul (“Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet”), Park Gyu-young (“Attack the Gas Station”), Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim (“Kim Ji-young: Born 1982”), Lee David (“The Terror Live”), Choi Seung-Hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yuri, and Won Ji.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously said that the new season will see Gi-hun seeking revenge, entering the game as a different, more serious character.

Netflix has also confirmed that Hwang Dong-hyuk is returning as director, writer, and producer. Firstman Studio is producing the drama.

The nine-episode first season launched on Netflix in 2021 and proved to be an all-time hit for the streamer. It became the most-watched non-English television series on Netflix, totaling more than 2 billion hours viewed on the platform over roughly an eight-hour run time, with a collective 265 million total views.

"Squid Game" also became the platform's most popular series of all time with a record 1.65 billion views in the first 28 days following its 2021 premiere.

The series was also a breakthrough foreign-language contender at the Emmys, nominated for 14 categories, including best drama series (a first for a non-English-language production) and winning six.

For the first season, Dong-hyuk made history as the first Asian person to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

Jung-Jae also became the first Asian man to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as well as the first to win the award for a non-English show.

The “Squid Game” universe has since been expanded to include an unscripted competition series, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” as well as an upcoming video game.

Season 2 of "Squid Game" will debut on December 26 on Netflix. The third and final season will follow in 2025.
