"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" Remake Delayed to 2024

With no end in sight for the ongoing writers and actors strikes, another major title is getting pushed to early next year: Prime Video’s reimagining of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

The project was initially scheduled for a November release and is from co-creators and executive producers Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Francesca Sloane (Fargo), starring Glover as John Smith and Maya Erskine (PEN15) as Jane Smith.

The official description reads: “Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.”

"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" is based on Doug Liman’s 2005 film, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a bored married couple who discover each is an assassin working for a competing agency who has been assigned to kill the other.

Amazon previously released a first look at the series in its Prime Day sneak peek of upcoming shows.

Last week, Glover — alongside many other top producers — had his overall deal at Amazon suspended amid the strikes. One studio chief explained: “If you were in active post or production on something and willing to work [in a non-writing capacity], we’d keep paying you. If you didn’t have anything or didn’t want to work, we stopped.”

"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" has been in the works for years, and originally had Phoebe Waller-Bridge as co-creator and co-star along with Glover. 

Waller-Bridge exited the series in 2021, and later explained to The Hollywood Reporter: “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it. And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.”
