On Saturday, Iconic figure and actor Mohamed Sobhy was honored by the prestigious US Metropolitan Opera after 40 years due to his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at Cairo Opera House in the presence of Dr. Enas Abdel Dayem, the Minister of Culture.
Abdel Dayem expressed that Sobhy is one of Egypt's cultural figures, and he succeeded in enriching the Egyptian soft powers with his unforgettable performances.
Last week, Sobhy said in his phone interview with “Hadith Al Qahera,” that this tribute has a great value, especially, during performing “Hamlet” in the form of opera.
In 1971, Hamlet was presented by Sobhy for the first time in Egypt to the audience, which was really challenging for such a complex theatrical adaptation to be widely accepted by the commons.
He added that he performed the play after presenting his most successful appearances: “Ali Beh Mazhar,” and “Entaha El Dars Ya Ghaby,” so he was a real star in the market. Therefore, he decided to re-introduce the theatrical work with his students, and stream the work on the TV.
Next Saturday, a grand celebration will be hosted at the Cairo Opera House in the presence of the Minister of Culture Dr. Enas Abdel Dayem.
The celebration also will include live streaming of Hamlet opera from the Metropolitan theatre as a tribute to Sobhy and his work.
It is worthy to mention that Sobhy’s “Hamlet” was performed by several Egyptian stars such as Hanaa Al Shorbagi, Ahmed Maher, Emad Rashad, and others.
The TV version was directed by the legendary Nour Al Demerdash who performed several world literature works such as The School for Scandals, and Salome.
Originally, Hamlet is considered one of the icons of world literature, and it opened the door to represent the characters that suffer from confusion, and melancholy.
Moreover, Sigmund Freud depended on several tragedies from the play to prove his theories about human psychology.
