Warner Bros. Pictures revealed Monday the poster and official trailer for "The Meg 2: The Trench", the sequel to 2018’s “The Meg“.
“The Meg 2” sees Jason Statham reprising his role as Jonas Taylor, an adventurous paleobiologist who studies the megalodon, a giant and prehistoric shark species.
The first movie in the franchise was released in 2018 and allocated $500 million at the box office. It featured Jonas tasked with rescuing the crew of a nuclear submarine that has malfunctioned. When he gets to the site of the disaster, the vehicle is attacked by an unidentified creature.
Jonas reports the incident to his superiors, who accuse him of imagining things due to the pressure he was under while located beneath the water. It would be too late when Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson), the billionaire behind a mission to discover a section of the Mariana Trench, would come to accept that Megalodons hadn't gone extinct and that humans should stay as far from them as possible.
The movies are based on the Steve Alten sci-fi thriller book series of the same name, which follows Jonas Taylor on his undersea close encounters with prehistoric sharks.
“Meg 2: The Trench” follows the title of Alten’s 1999 novel sequel to his 1997 novel “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror”.
It follows Jonas Taylor five years after he encountered a megalodon. After a series of mysterious underwater attacks, Taylor ventures to Mana One, a subaquatic research facility, where he finds that the megalodon has followed.
Sienna Guillory, Cliff Curtis, and Shuya Sophia will star in the project.
It is directed by Ben Wheatley from a script by Dean Georgaris, Ric Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber, who also wrote the 2018 movie.
"The Meg 2: The Trench" is set to hits theaters on August 4. You can check out the trailer below.
