Production began on the movie adaptation of “Mean Girls The Musical”.
The upcoming movie is a remaining of the Broadway musical adaptation of the 2004 teen comedy "Mean Girls".
The Tony-nominated Broadway musical and the 2004 teen comedy follows teenager Cady Heron, who moves from Africa with her scientist parents to the suburbs of Illinois, where she gets swept up in the dynamics of her new high school’s social hierarchy. She falls in with a popular clique known as The Plastics.
The 2004 movie starred Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, Rachel McAdams as Rapp, Amanda Seyfried as Karen Smith, Lacey Chabert as Gretchen Wieners, Daniel Franzese as Damian, Lizzy Caplan as Janis Ian, and Jonathan Bennett as Aaron Samuels.
Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, and Reneé Rapp — who starred as Regina George in the Broadway musical— are set to star in the upcoming movie.
Rice will be playing Cady, Avantika as Karen, Bebe Wood as Gretchen, Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, Cravalho as Janis, and Spivey will be Damien.
In addition, “SNL” alums Tim Meadows and Tina Fey will be reprising their roles as Principal Duval and Ms. Norbury, respectively.
Newcomers include Jenna Fischer plays Cady’s mom and “Girls5eva” star Busy Philipps starring as June. George a.k.a. the “cool mom”, played by Amy Poehler in the original movie.
Mark Waters directed the movie from a script by Tina Fey. It was based on the 2002 nonfiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman.
The movie earned $128 million at the global box office and has since achieved cult teen movie status.
Paramount Pictures is adapting the new movie for Paramount+.
The Broadway show was written by Fey, with music by Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin.
Lorne Michaels will return to produce alongside original Mean Girls scripter and star Tina Fey, who wrote the book for the Broadway show.
Fey will also pen the movie's script, with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. are set to direct.
