“Materialists,” Celine Song‘s all-star follow up to her two-time Oscar-nominated directorial debut “Past Lives,” has received a U.S. release date by A24.
Written, directed and produced by Song, who reunites with “Past Lives” producer David Hinojosa of 2AM and Killer Films, “Materialists” stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.
The rom-com follows a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.
As with “Past Lives,” producers on the project include Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler for Killer Films and Hinojosa of 2AM.
After premiering at Sundance in 2023, Song’s debut feature “Past Lives,” starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro and exploring the relationship of two childhood friends over 24 years, would go on to become one of the most talked about movies of the year, underlining the filmmaker as an exciting new cinematic voice.
The feature, also distributed by A24, wound up being listed in numerous “best of” lists, landing five Golden Globes nominations, three BAFTA nominations and Oscar nominations for both Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It would earn more than $42 million globally.
Last month, A24’s latest feature with Ari Aster “Eddington” was reported to be plotting a Cannes debut and summer release.
The movie — an electric thriller also starring Pascal alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Austin Butler — revolves around a small-town sheriff in New Mexico with ambitious dreams.
