Thousands of people protested in Vienna after the Austrian government declared a statewide lockdown starting Monday to combat the country's rapidly rising coronavirus infection rates, according to TRT World.
Crowds poured into Heroes' Square in front of the Hofburg, the former imperial palace in central Vienna, on Saturday, whistling, blowing horns, and beating drums, one of numerous protest places.
Many demonstrators hoisted Austrian flags and held signs with phrases such as "no to vaccination," "enough is enough," and "down with the fascist dictatorship," chanting "resistance."
The majority of the signs emphasised the recently announced vaccine mandate: One said, "My Body, My Choice." Another exclaimed, "We're Standing Up for Our Kids!"
A total of 1,300 cops were on duty. They utilised loudspeakers to inform demonstrators that masks were required, but the majority did not comply.
