Magnitude 7.0 earthquake kills 98 on Indonesia's Lombok

SEE-Augustst 6th: 98 People lost their lives and more than 230 others were severely injured when a powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Lombok Island in Indonesia on Sunday, a spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency said.

 

After the quake, a tsunami warning was issued by Indonesia's agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics.

 

Officials said, " Everyone who died was an Indonesian citizen, most of those who died were struck by falling debris from collapsed buildings."

Thousands of tourists were evacuated to near by islands after the deadly earthquake hit Lombok, one of Indonesia's popular islands. This earthquake is the second one to hit the island in a week.

 

"There was an urgent need for ready-to-eat food, mineral water, blankets, clothes and other basic necessities," the National Board of Disaster Management announced.

Furthermore, three C-130 cargo planes were sent by the Indonesian Army to bring food, medical supplies, and communication equipment to the thousands affected by the disaster.
