Sony's upcoming "Spider-Man" spinoff movie "Madame Web" has moved up its release date by two days, and it will now release on February 14, 2024, instead of the previously scheduled February 16.

The project is one of the most mysterious movies coming in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

In the comics, Madame Web, whose real name was Cassandra Webb, is depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and thus was connected to a life-support system shaped like a spiderweb. The heroine never actively fought any villain due to her age and medical condition.

Madame Web gained her nickname due to being permanently attached to a life-supporting system. The project sees Dakota Johnson as the titular character and will be the first female-led movie in Sony’s Marvel universe.

It also stars Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Tahar Rahim.

The spinoff movie is directed by S.J. Clarkson. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless penned the screenplay, with Kerem Sanga also penning a previous draft.

"Madame Web" will seemingly be a prequel to some degree, supposedly taking place in a 2000s version of New York.

"Madame Web"  will feature the live-action debut of Spider-Woman. "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney is confirmed to play the Julia Carpenter version.

Created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, Carpenter debuted in Marvel Comics in June 1984 and has had several heroic titles throughout her history. In the lore, she is the second Spider-Woman, with Jessica Drew being the first and most famous.

At one point, she even became Madame Web when Cassandra Webb passed away once she passed on her powers to the younger hero.

Julia has had a variety of powers both as Spider-Woman and Madame Web, which poses many questions about what the live-action movie will do with Sweeney's version.

"Madame Web" is reportedly setting up Sweeney to have a larger role within the Spider-Man Universe.

Spider-Man movie producer Amy Pascal recently confirmed that a Spider-Woman movie is in development, which could potentially be a spinoff for Sweeney's character.

Sony Pictures' New Release Schedule

The new release date comes in the middle of a major slate shuffle from Sony Pictures due to the ongoing dual strike.

The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA are currently fighting for their rights as their members weren't paid a fair wage for the hard work they put into the movies and television series that entertain the world.

The strike has already delayed multiple productions, and it will continue to do so until studios decide to approach their workers with a fair deal.

Other titles related to Spider-Man have changed their release dates due to the ongoing strike, including "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" and "Kraven the Hunte"r.

While audiences might have to wait a little bit longer to enjoy the stories making their way to the big screen, it's important to remember that without the hard work of actors and writers, the projects wouldn't exist in the first place.

The industry will get back on track as soon as the studios agree to pay their workers a fair wage, reaching a deal that will be beneficial for the entire industry going forward.
