Lucid Motors unveiled the design for its first-ever electric sedan, the Lucid Air. Tesla firm considers itself the electric car technology leader, but there’s a new competitor emerging to vie for that title.
The features include battery charging described as the fastest “ever offered” for an electric vehicle, more than 1,000 horsepower, a streamlined interior design and best-in-class front trunk space.
For self-driving, the Air includes six radar modules, eight cameras and four LIDAR sensors, all letting it detect obstacles and other traffic. A dashboard display shows drivers what the car detects, inspiring confidence in its self-driving ability.
In contrast, there is plenty of legroom for rear passengers. Adding to rear-seat comfort, Lucid will offer optional inpidual seats inspired by executive jet interiors, with a large degree of recline.
The car's size compares nicely to the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S. It looks to be a smidge longer overall, a bit narrower and sits in between the Porsche and the Tesla in terms of height. Lucid hasn't provided any interior dimensions.
According to Jessica Caldwell, an executive director at auto market researcher Edmunds, explained that the Lucid Air might finally rival the Tesla Model S and challenge Elon Musk and his team.
The company expects to begin deliveries of the all-electric vehicle in the spring of 2021. Multiple models are available for sale, with prices ranging from roughly $80,000 for the entry-level version to up to $169,000 for the limited-volume Lucid Air Dream Edition.
