Maserati announced its first supercar in 15 years, which Developed by the Maserati Innovation Lab over the past two years, the MC20 evolved from the famed MC12, which ceased production in 2010, and signals the venerable Italian automaker’s return to racing.

The guiding theme of the MC20’S design was the Brand’s historic identity, with all the elegance, performance and comfort integral to its genetic make-up. The focus on performance led to the conception of a car with a distinct personality, with unmistakable forms that render it unique.

According to Forbes, the butterfly doors add an exotic touch to the shapely exterior of the MC20, but the looks aren’t just for show. It took thousands of hours in the wind tunnel to develop a shape that would generate road-hugging downforce without any obvious aero aids like rear spoilers.

The long-awaited MC20 features the first engine built in-house by Maserati in more than two decades, the Nettuno is a 3-liter, twin-turbo V6 with an F1-inspired pre-combustion chamber and a dual-spark plug configuration. It produces 621 horsepower, can go from 0 to 60 mph in a bracing 2.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 202 mph.

On other hand, in from 2022, an electric version of the MC20 is expected that will feature leading-edge EV powertrain technology, with three electric motors drawing power from an 800-volt battery pack. That’s double the voltage of the average EV battery pack and so far only Porsche has produced a car with this advantage.

Noteworthy, Maserati was founded in Bologna, Italy, in 1914 as a manufacturer of aircraft and car parts. Then, before long, it branched out to racing cars.

In addition introducing the MC20 supercar, Maserati also recently unveiled high-performance "Trofeo" versions of its sedans, the Ghibli and Quattroporte. With 580-horsepower engines, they are billed as the fastest Maserati sedans ever.

The MC20 will go into production at the end of this year, but the car won't be available in the US until the fall of 2021.
