The Louvre Museum resumed welcoming visitors at full capacity on Wednesday following the decision by staff to suspend a strike that had been launched to demand better working conditions.

According to multiple sources the museum fully reopened its doors after employees decided to pause the industrial action.

Valérie Bou a representative of the CFDT union told AFP that between 200 and 300 employees participated in a general assembly on Wednesday where they voted not to continue the strike that had begun in mid December paused over the holiday period and resumed on Monday.

Despite the suspension of the strike negotiations with the Ministry of Culture have not made significant progress.

The joint union group had submitted a strike notice in early December which has not been formally withdrawn and another general assembly meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning.

The Wednesday assembly caused a temporary delay in the museum’s opening but the Louvre administration later confirmed that the museum was open to the public in full.

On Monday during the strike visitor access had been limited to the “Masterpieces” section which includes world famous works such as the Mona Lisa the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

Employees continue to protest issues including understaffing particularly in the museum’s security department the planned increase in ticket prices for non European tourists starting January 14 and the deteriorating condition of the building highlighted by the theft of eight jewels from the French crown on October 19.
