Spanish police announced on Friday that they have recovered a rare Pablo Picasso painting dating back to 1919, which went missing earlier this month before it was due to be displayed at a temporary exhibition in southern Spain.

The painting, titled "Still Life with Guitar," was part of a larger collection of artworks transported from Madrid to Granada for an exhibition organized by the Caja Granada Foundation.

The loss was discovered on October 10, after workers noticed the piece missing during the unloading process, prompting organizers to file an official police report.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), police said initial findings suggest that the artwork may not have been loaded onto the transport truck before it left Madrid.

The Heritage Protection Unit continues to investigate the case but has not yet determined whether a criminal act was involved.

Authorities released photos showing forensic experts examining the recovered painting. The artwork had already been registered in Interpol’s global database of stolen art, which includes around 57,000 items.

The Caja Granada Foundation stated that security cameras showed only 57 artworks being unloaded at the exhibition site, instead of the 58 that were supposed to arrive, revealing the disappearance of Picasso’s piece before the show opened.
