It has been one hundred and thirty-three years since the death of legendary Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

Born in 1853, in the Netherlands, he lived in the golden age of creativity in Europe among many influential artists of the 20th century.

Van Gogh has been called the father of modern oil paintings' school, and he is widely revered as one of the greatest artists of all time and the most talented person to have ever walked the earth.

He is well known for his seminal works like Starry Night, but his brooding self-portraits receive a lot of recognition, too.

Among the over 2,100 artworks was a simple portrait of a peasant woman. Painted in 1885 just before the artist's move from his native land to the artistic circles of Paris, it features a rather dour young woman in a voluminous white cap.

In fact, Gogh's paintings did not sell during his lifetime, during which he was generally considered a madman and a failure, although some collectors recognized the value of his work.

His fame came only after his death, when he evolved in the public imagination into a misunderstood genius.
