Today, July 20, marks the birth anniversary of legendary actor and flok singer Mohamed Roushdy, who died in 2005.

Born in Desouk City, Kafr El Sheikh, in 1928, Mohamed Abdel Rahman El-Raghi made his debut as a young reciter of the Holi Quran and later he joined the Egyptian Radio Station as a flok singer. 

He embarked upon an acting career in the late 1950s under the name Mohamed Roushdy and for fifty years that name appeared across film, TV, and stage in many projects that delighted and still continue to entertain soars of audiences.

Throughout his career, Roushdy featured in a number of hit films and TV dramas like  ‘La Eilh el Allah’, There Is No God But Allah  (1988), the movie Sultan (1958), Afreet Samara (1959), Ward Wi Shouk (1970), Abu Haded (1958) and Adwya (1968).

Moreover, Roushdy performed a number of marvelous concerts and was called the “King of Egypt's Folk Music” because of his appeal to both young and old for more than half a century.

His iconic melodies and songs were the backgrounds of many Egyptians Gen X, and Millennials, and their eyes tear up whenever they heard his songs on the radio, up until this day, according to Maspero Zaman.

His starting point was when he got to know the poet Anwar Zaalouk then the composer Baligh Hamdy and poet Abdel Rhaim El-Abnoudy. 

Late singer-actor Rushdy’s most loved song without a doubt was '’Taier Ya Hawa”, a song that was the best-selling song of the 1970s.

The renowned singer released his first song 'Kolo Le Mazon El-bald' after earning a degree from Fuad I Music Institute in 1949.

His second most popular hit is ‘Haret El-Sakien’, the song that spent seven weeks at the top of Egypt's radio pop chart while also going to the top of the country and Arab charts.

The iconic star's next hit to remember would be 'Taier Ya Hawa ', a song he made after returning from his tour in Morocco, it became his first chart-topping hit of the 1960s.

Roshdy's “Arabawy’ was the follow-up to the success of ‘Adawaya’ which became a massive pop hit for millions of fans and young singers

His other most famous songs include: "Under the Tree", and "The Deer's Heel", as well as the radio operetta Adham El-Sharkawy.

The late musician made a great contribution to the development and popularization of Arab folk music and the great work of Egypt’s singers. All Egyptians know about his talent as a classic folk singer who followed the classic and popular music approaches. At all times, he was highly appreciated by the Arab people. He received numerous awards for his artistic achievements.

"His village teachers taught him to recite the Qur’an, and he is said to have memorized the entire book," Maspero Zaman said.
