Laurence Fishburne Joins Mike Flanagan's "The Exorcist"

Laurence Fishburne is teaming up with Mike Flanagan for a new nightmare in “The Exorcist” universe.

An Oscar nominee and Emmy and Tony Award winner, Fisburne boards the franchise reboot with a previously announced ensemble led by Scarlett Johansson, Jacobi Jupe, and Diane Lane.

Flanagan’s adaptation of the horror classic is set to be an entirely new story set in “The Exorcist” universe and not a sequel to 2023’s “The Exorcist: Believer.”

While plot details are under wraps, the 1973 original, directed by New Hollywood icon William Friedkin, followed anxious mother Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), who recruits the help of two Catholic priests (Jason Miller and Max von Sydow) to help rid her daughter, Regan (Linda Blair), of a demonic presence corrupting her body and mind.

The production will shoot in New York City and is set for a wide theatrical release in March 2027 from Universal Pictures.

Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment will produce the film with Flanagan, who is writing and directing via his Red Room Pictures. Alexandra Magistro will also executive produce for Red Room.

David Robinson produces for Morgan Creek while Jason Blum and Ryan Turek serve as producer and executive producer, respectively, for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.

Fishburne is perhaps best known for his iconic character Morpheus in “The Matrix” franchise.

A multi-hyphenate with more than five decades in show business, he made his film debut at 15 in “Apocalypse Now.”

He is the recipient of a Tony for August Wilson’s “Two Trains Running,” multiple Emmys (including for “#FreeRayshawn”), an Academy Award nomination for “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and seven NAACP Image Awards. His filmography includes “Boyz n the Hood,” “The Color Purple,” “Mystic River,” “Deep Cover” and “King of New York.”

In 2000, Fishburne co-founded Cinema Gypsy Productions with producing partner Helen Sugland. Their work includes “black-ish,” its spinoffs, and the Emmy-winning animated series “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur."
