Laila Elwi Celebrates Her 61th Birthday

The renowned Egyptian star Laila Elwi, who is best known for her power-packed performances on ‘Al Ragol Al Talet‘, is celebrating her birthday today, Jan. 4.

Elwi is one of the finest actresses that the world film industry could ever have, turned 61 today. The actress, who was honored at the 34th Cairo International Film Festival ceremony in 2010 with the Lifetime Achievement Award, is reportedly planning to have a private birthday celebration this year with her friends and family members.

Elwi was born in 1962 to an Egyptian father and a Greek mother called Stella who has roots in the Icaria island. She grew up speaking a mix of Arabic and Greek languages at home.

She made her showbiz debut at a young age in a play entitled, 'Taman Sittat' (8 Women) directed by Galal El Sharkawy.

Elwi shot to fame with her success in Kharag wa Lam Ya'oud (1985) and many remarkable films and stunning performances followed suit. Her performance in ‘Al-Harafesh’ (1986) won her much praise from fans and critics alike.

Throughout her career, she featured in more than 70 movies and has been honored at Egyptian and international festivals with awards for most of her roles.

Among her notable works are Al-Massir (1997), "Lahazat Harega" (Critical moments, 2007), ‘Shams’ (2014) ‘Napoleon Wal Mahrousa’ (2012), ‘Wa Kan Wahman’ (TV short) 1984.

In 2021, she received the heartthrob of all time at the first edition of Red Sea International Film Festival.
