Kate Beckinsale has been cast in the lead role of "Twilight of the Dead," the long gestating “final chapter” of George A. Romero’s classic zombie saga.
The horror project, which has buy-in from the Romero estate, has recently undergone a facelift with new cast, director, and financiers.
Beckinsale takes over from Milla Jovovich. Additional casting is in process.
The film will be “set on a decimated earth where the last vestiges of humanity are trapped between warring factions and an evolving undead threat”.
The Paz Brothers, Doron, and Yoav Paz, whose movies include The Golem and Plan A, have been tapped to direct the movie, taking over from Brad Anderson.
Stunts vet Ho Sung Pak (Bullet Train) is aboard to direct stunt and action sequences.
Also new to the project and giving it fresh impetus is Bob Yari’s Magenta Light Studios, which has secured the North American rights and is due to distribute the film in theaters across the U.S. and Canada.
Horror icon Romero had written a treatment for the movie before he passed in 2017 and regarded Twilight Of The Dead as the conclusion to his epic saga, which comprised six movies and various spinoffs and remakes.
The last movie in the franchise came out in 2009. "Twilight Of The Dead" was first revealed in 2021.
The producers previously told us they haven’t closed the door on the possibility of additional movies in a new franchise should this new one go well.
The film is driven by the Roundtable Entertainment team, led by producers John Baldecchi and Sarah Donnelly with executive producer and Roundtable President Dominic Ianno, and in partnership with Suzanne Romero.
Paolo Zelati is the producer, screenwriter, and author of the treatment together with Romero. Producers also include Bob Yari, Shaun Sanghani of SSS Entertainment, and Aanaxion’s Kenneth Kim, Ho Sung Pak, and George Furla.
International sales are being handled by The Syndicate, with executive producers Jeffrey Giles and Michael Lurie launching the project at the Cannes market. Buyers will be able to read a screenplay and see concept materials.
Executive producers include Stephanie Caleb, Roundtable’s Alex Dundas and Jason Resnick, Josh Kagan, Sean Carey, Stu Snyder, Hakim Bangash, Victor Ianno, Streamline Global’s Emily Hunter Salveson, Jamie Thompson, Brian Skiba, Jeff Elliott, and Aanaxion’s Bong-Seob Mun, Bang-Ok Joo. Young-Joo Ji, Sung-Il Ahn, and Kwang Jin Kim.
“We’re thrilled to have Kate Beckinsale starring in Twilight of the Dead. Her extraordinary talent, emotional range, and commanding screen presence make her the perfect actress to lead a final chapter worthy of George’s legacy.” said Roundtable’s Baldecchi.
“Stepping into Romero’s world is the ultimate privilege for any genre filmmaker,” the Paz Brothers said in a joint statement. “This is more than a continuation, it’s a responsibility. We are committed to honoring his voice while delivering a visceral, terrifying, impactful experience for today’s audience that resonates beyond the screen.”
“George Romero is one of the most successful and influential creatives in the horror and genre space, and his final film deserves to be experienced on the big screen,” commented Bob Yari, CEO of Magenta Light Studios. “We’re proud to partner with his estate and the filmmakers to bring Twilight of the Dead to audiences. As a standout addition to Magenta Light Studios’ growing film catalog, we are committed to delivering a thrilling theatrical experience for fans who have been waiting years for this conclusion.”
Magenta Light’s releases include "Deep Water," "Protector," "Strange Darlings," and "Bride Hard".
