Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton are teaming up for "The Room Next Door,” the first English-language movie from Oscar-winning Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar.

The casting was confirmed Thursday by Almodóvar’s production company, El Deseo, with a re-post on its Instagram story following months of speculation and online rumors.

“The Room Next Door” is a “drama between a mother and daughter” that it will be filmed in the spring in New York and Madrid. No other details about the plot or Moore and Swinton’s roles were revealed.

“Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton will star in Pedro Almodóvar's new movie "The Room Next Door". The actresses are placed under the command of the director from La Mancha in a drama between mother and daughter that will be filmed in the spring in New York and Madrid and will be his first film shot in English,” the post said.

Per the plot synopsis released by Pathe, "The Room Next Door is the complex story of a flawed mother and her daughter, separated by a massive misunderstanding. At the heart of this conflict, Ingrid (Moore), a friend of Martha’s (Swinton) mother, becomes a witness to each person’s pain and bitterness. Martha is a war reporter, Ingrid is an autofiction novelist. The film addresses the limitless cruelty of wars and highlights the unique approaches of the two writers to depict reality. It explores the themes of death, friendship and sexual urge, considered essential allies in the fight against horror. In a house nestled in the heart of a nature reserve in New England, the two friends will experience a situation that is both extreme and surprisingly tender."

Almodóvar had previously stated that his shorts “The Human Voice” and “Strange Way of Life” — which are both in English — were merely warm-ups so he could grow accustomed to directing English-speaking actors.

He had previously been attached to direct the English-language movie “A Manual for Cleaning Women”, which Cate Blanchett was due to produce and star in, but dropped out in 2022.

“The Room Next Door” marks Almodóvar’s first movie since 2021’s “Parallel Mothers”, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival.

Penélope Cruz, who plays a single mother in a story that also involves the search for missing bodies of those murdered during the Spanish Civil War, would go on to win the festival’s Volpi Cup for best actress, while the movie garnered eight Goya Award nominations.

One of the most recognized European directors with a huge international following, Almodóvar’s previous work includes “Talk to Her”, “The Skin I Live In”, “Pain and Glory”, and “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.”

Swinton previously teased her involvement in "The Room Next Door" during an interview with a French culture magazine. She previously starred in Almodovar’s 2021 short “The Human Voice.”
