Joint Military Committee: Sudan, Niger, Chad Agree to Withdraw Fighters from Libya

The Libyan Joint Military Committee (known also as 5 + 5) announced that Niger, Chad, and Sudan have expressed their willingness to cooperate in removing fighters belonging to them from Libyan territory.

The committee said in a statement, yesterday, Monday, that to complement the results of the meeting of the Joint Military Committee in Geneva on October 8, 2021, in which it adopted an action plan for the exit of mercenaries, foreign fighters, and foreign forces from Libyan territory, at its request.

Officials of the Military Committee met with representatives of Sudan, Chad, and Niger.

The meeting was hosted by Egypt and facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and in the presence of the head of the mission, Jan Kubis, for the purpose of consultation and the development of a communication and coordination mechanism.

The committee added in the statement that it sought to find common ground that would enable these countries for joint cooperation to start practical steps on the ground to get out all mercenaries and foreign fighters belonging to those countries in a manner that ensures the stability of the Libyan state and all neighboring countries.

The committee indicated that a positive atmosphere prevailed in the meetings in terms of proposals and discussion as views were heard from various parties, which in their entirety emphasized the need to start establishing permanent and effective channels of communication.

The committee stressed that the representatives of Sudan, Chad, and Niger “expressed their full readiness to coordinate and cooperate to ensure the exit of all fighters belonging to their countries.

Kubis said that the Joint Military Committee (5+5) intends to develop a plan for a gradual and balanced exit of all mercenaries and foreign forces from Libya.
