Fathom Events and Vertical have partnered to bring Johnny Depp’s comeback movie “Jeanne du Barry,” last year’s Cannes opening night movie, to U.S. audiences with an exclusive theatrical engagement in over 500 theaters starting May 2.

Directed by French filmmaker Maïwenn, who also co-stars, the movie received a seven-minute standing ovation after its opening night world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

"Jeanne Du Barry" marks Depp’s first film role in three years, following his victory in his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The acclaimed actor made his last on-screen appearance in 2020’s "Minamata", where he played war photographer W. Eugene Smith.

The historical romance drama stars Depp as Louis XV and Maïwenn as his court favorite, Jeanne Vaubernier.

The movie follows the life of Jeanne du Barry, Louis XV’s last royal mistress at the Court of Versailles, after Madame de Pompadour.

Jeanne du Barry, the illegitimate daughter of a seamstress, used her intelligence and beauty to rise through the ranks of 18th Century Paris high society and Louis XV’s Court and managed to become Louis XV’s favorite companion.

Unaware of her status as a courtesan, he regains his appetite for life thanks to their relationship. They fall madly in love. Against all etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.

The movie had an 11-week shoot, which took place both in studios and at famous locations in France like the Palace of Versailles.

Alongside Depp and Maïwenn, the cast includes Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair.

Maïwenn directed from a screenplay she co-wrote alongside Teddy Lussi-Modeste.

Why Not Productions lead produces with IN2 and France Télévisions also on board as producers.

Key crew includes cinematographer Laurent Dailland, production designer Angelo Zamparutti, costume designer Yurgen Doering, John Nollet on hair design, Tom Pécheux on make-up, and Nicolas Provost on sound. Stephen Warbeck is composing the original music.
