Acclaimed Canadian filmmaker James Cameron is the king of the box office as blockbusters “Titanic” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” lead global box office charts over newcomer “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.”

“Titanic”, which returned to theaters in honor of its 25th anniversary, grossed $22.3 million at the global box office, while “Avatar: The Way of Water” added $25.8 million in its ninth weekend of release.

Meanwhile, “Magic Mike’s Last Dance”, the third entry in the Channing Tatum-led comedy saga, landed in first place at the domestic box office with $8.2 million, but the Warner Bros. release trailed Cameron’s blockbusters globally with $18.6 million globally.

“Titanic” and “The Way of Water” rank as the third- and fourth-highest-grossing movies in history with the former standing at $2.217 billion and the latter currently at $2.213 billion.

“Avatar 2” is expected In the coming days to swap places with “Titanic” on the all-time box office charts.

Cameron is responsible for three of the four biggest international releases of all time, with “Avatar” still standing as the champ with $2.92 billion. “Avengers: Endgame”, which wasn’t directed by Cameron, looms large in second place with $2.7 billion.

Avatar fans have been waiting thirteen years for its sequel, which premiered on December 16 and started ten years after the original.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña returned as Jake and Neytiri. They now live in Pandora with their family.

Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Dileep Rao, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet also star in the movie.

Cameron, who has been working on the sequel since 2013, said previously that for the movie to be profitable, it will “have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

The movie is the first of four “Avatar” sequels planned. An untitled third “Avatar” movie is set for release on December 20, 2024.

Filming has been completed on "Avatar 3", while production on a fourth and fifth film is underway.
