The cause of death of Hollywood star James Caan, best known for his roles in “The Godfather”, “Elf” and "Misery", has been revealed.

Caan died of a heart attack and coronary artery disease, the death certificate has confirmed.

He was best known for his role as Sonny Corleone in the 1972's “The Godfather,” which earned him a nomination for the best-supporting actor category at the Oscar and Golden Globe.

Caan also had notable performances in the movie “The Yards”, “Dogville”, “Misery”, and “Elf.”

Many celebrities from the industry paid tribute to the legendary actor on social media, including his "The Godfather" co-star Al Pacino.

“Jimmy was my fictional brother and my lifelong friend. It’s hard to believe that he won’t be in the world anymore because he was so alive and daring. A great actor, a brilliant director, and my dear friend. I’m gonna miss him.” Al Pacino said in a statement.

Several actors playing mobsters onscreen have tragically died this year. The "Sopranos" star Tony Sirico passed away at the age of 79 earlier this month, and the "Goodfellas" star Paul Sorvino died at 83.

Ray Liotta, who also starred in the "Goodfellas", passed away his sleep at the end of May. He was 67.
