The Indian Embassy in Cairo said on Thursday it was organizing a series of events across Egypt to celebrate the International Day of Yoga 2026, highlighting growing cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Egypt.

Observed annually on June 21, the International Day of Yoga aims to promote harmony, health and well-being through the practice of yoga, an ancient tradition originating in India.

The embassy said this year's celebrations in Egypt have attracted increasing participation from government institutions, diplomatic missions, cultural organizations, media representatives, academics and yoga practitioners.

The activities officially began on May 22 with a large public yoga event sponsored by Indian Ambassador to Egypt Suresh Reddy at Al-Nasr Sports Club in Cairo under the theme "Yoga and Indian Culture." More than 300 participants attended the event, reflecting growing interest in yoga as a lifestyle that promotes physical and mental well-being.

A second major event was held on June 2 in cooperation with Egypt's Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ismailia Governorate at Othmason Sports Club overlooking Lake Timsah in Ismailia.

In Cairo, the embassy organized a yoga workshop on June 4 in cooperation with the "Welcome to Egypt" initiative of the Egyptian Diplomats' Spouses Association, aiming to raise awareness of mental and physical health among members of the diplomatic community.

Another flagship event took place on June 5 at the historic Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria in cooperation with the Alexandria Governorate. Participants practiced yoga sessions along the Mediterranean coast and attended cultural performances showcasing historical links between India and Egypt.

The embassy also hosted a "Yoga Day for Media" event at the ambassador's residence on 10 June, bringing together media representatives for yoga exercises and cultural activities designed to highlight the physical and mental benefits of the practice.

As part of the celebrations, the embassy organized an international yoga-themed caricature competition that attracted 210 participants from 33 countries. Winners received cash prizes, while their works were displayed in an exhibition at the ambassador's residence.

Further events are scheduled for June 13 at the Al Ahly Club's Sheikh Zayed branch and on June 15 at the Misr Public Library - El Zawya Branch as part of efforts to promote yoga across Egypt.

The main International Day of Yoga celebration is set to take place at 7 a.m. on June 21 at the Giza Pyramids, where public figures, officials and yoga practitioners are expected to participate in a mass yoga session aimed at promoting unity, peace and shared well-being, the embassy said.
