On the evening of Thursday, November 28, the 4th edition of the Cairo Francophone Cinema Festival commenced with an impressive opening ceremony at the Small Theater of the Cairo Opera House. The festival, chaired by writer and film critic Dr. Yasser Moheb, welcomed a distinguished gathering of artists, diplomats, and Francophone experts. The event was hosted by actor Tamer Farag.
The evening began with a short film introducing the festival. Host Tamer Farag greeted the audience, highlighting that Francophonie is more than just a language—it is a spirit connecting over 88 countries through French culture, which embodies refinement and sophistication. He emphasized that art, as a universal language, serves as an ideal medium to promote this culture. This year’s festival showcases innovative uses of modern technology, not as a challenge but as a tool for progress, particularly for the youth. It also features a competition aimed at discovering new talents, offering the younger generation an opportunity to connect with cinema legends.
In his opening remarks, festival chairman Dr. Yasser Moheb stressed that the festival, held amidst global challenges, is a testament to Arab solidarity. He noted that cinema cannot be isolated from the world’s upheavals and announced a comprehensive program featuring films that reflect contemporary realities in cinema and humanity.

- Diplomatic Support for Palestine
Ambassador Amr Goweily, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered a speech expressing solidarity with Palestine, emphasizing Egypt's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. He highlighted that the festival advocates for linguistic diversity through Francophonie, which promotes pluralism. Egypt, being the only country hosting a Francophone operator, underlines its commitment to global cultural dialogue. Goweily stated that the festival sends a message of solidarity with Palestinians, showcasing the power of art in addressing social issues.
- Highlighting Humanitarian Efforts
Legal advisor Naji Al-Naji shed light on the humanitarian tragedy caused by ongoing conflicts, including over 45,000 fatalities and 150,000 displaced individuals. He praised the role of art in fostering justice and humanity, calling for a reevaluation of cultural engagement. Al-Naji commended Egypt’s artistic community for supporting the Palestinian cause, noting that 14 Palestinian films would be screened at the festival to highlight the plight of the Palestinian people.

The event featured a stunning dance performance blending cultures with music by Charles Aznavour, celebrating his centenary, and Farid Al-Atrash, marking 50 years since his passing. Another dance segment honored the centennial of actress and dancer Samia Gamal’s birth.

Dr. Moheb presented awards to several honorees for their outstanding contributions to cinema. In turn, Director Ahmed Nader Galal expressed pride in his recognition and a desire to continue creating impactful cinema. TV presenter Salma El Shamaa celebrated the festival’s innovative ideas, noting the historical ties between French and Egyptian cinema. Actress Elham Shahin, a major supporter of the festival, emphasized its growing significance in fostering creativity between Egypt and Francophone countries. She reiterated the festival’s dedication to humanitarian causes, including Palestine.

The festival included the Egyptian premiere of the documentary The Third Rahbani, celebrating the life of Lebanese composer Elias Rahbani, as a message of support for Lebanon.
