The highly-anticipated movie will also feature Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis.
“Luther” centered around grim and grisly storylines of murder and crime in London and has run for five series since it first premiered in 2010.
The series earned Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and SAG awards for Elba, as well as Emmy nominations.
The few plot details available for the movie revealed that the production will be a continuation of the TV series, which will also feature Serkis as the criminal mastermind being hunted, while Erivo will star as a rival detective to Luther.
Veteran TV director Jamie Payne, who directed Season 5 of the show, will helm the spin-off from a script written by series creator Neil Cross. The movie will be produced by Netflix.
Cross and Elba will also produce the movie along with Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready of Chernin Entertainment. Chernin’s Dan Finlay, BBC Studios’ Priscilla Parish, and Kris Thykier serve as executive producers.
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the movie.
