"I Know What You Did Last Summer" sequel reboot from Sony Pictures has found its principal cast.

Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King are in talks to join the cast reboot.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who co-wrote Thor: Love and Thunder and directed Netflix’s Do Revenge, is on board to direct the follow-up to the 1997 slasher movie, with Leah McKendrick on board to pen the script. Neal Moritz is producing.

While the film’s plot is under wraps for now, original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to return.

The 1997 movie follows four young friends bound by a tragic accident who are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town.

The movie was a hit and remained in the top box office spot for three consecutive weeks as well as earned nominations at several awards shows, including the MTV Movie Awards and the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" helped launch the careers of Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe.

The property spawned the sequels "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" (1998) and "I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" (2006).

Hewitt and Prinze reprised their roles in the 1998 sequel, while the 2006 movie featured a completely new cast. It spawned a streaming series on Amazon, which bowed in 2021. The movies are based on the 1973 young-adult suspense novel by Lois Duncan.

The project is in the earliest stages of development. The idea for the new movie came from Robinson and McKendrick, who blew away studio execs when they pitched this idea for a sequel last fall and comes as the Scream franchise has been successful at Paramount, with a mix of legacy characters and new stars populating the 2022 feature and the upcoming Scream 6.

The idea of bringing back original cast members to draw fans while also adding fresh faces to relaunch the franchise was too good for the studio to pass up.

Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on July 18, 2025.

Sony also saw it important to not reboot the franchise but do a sort of “passing of the torch”-type sequel where original cast members are brought back as a new generation of cast members are added to the ensemble, similar to movies like Scream or Creed.
