HBO unveiled Thursday the official trailer of the “House of the Dragon“, the first Game of Thrones prequel series.

The series, based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, was announced two years ago. It centers around the story of the Targaryen family in Westeros and is set 300 years before the events in Game of Thrones.

The trailer featured Westeros in upheaval over who will take the throne following the death of King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine).

Although custom dictates that the King's firstborn ascend to the position, which leaves the successor to the throne Viserys' daughter princess Rhaenyra Targaryen ( Emma D’Arcy), who will be the first woman to take the throne.

Rhaenyra remains determined to maintain her birthright, despite the protests of some men.

Standing in opposition to Rhaenyra's rightful claim is her uncle Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), who had his designs on the throne, believing himself to be the rightful heir.

The series is one of six Game of Thrones-related prequel projects in the works at HBO.

It is co-created and showrunner by Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.

“House of the Dragon” debuts on HBO and on HBO Max on August 21.
