The House of Representatives approved in its plenary session on Sunday, chaired by Speaker of the House Ali Abdel-Aal, a draft law submitted by the government regarding a concession to set up and operate a roll-on, roll-off (RORO) vehicle terminal at East Port Said of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) with the B.O.T system.

The explanatory draft law stated that the new terminal will be Egypt’s first exclusive RORO terminal, and it will have a wharf area that allows two large Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) to berth simultaneously. The terminal will additionally offer sufficient vehicle storage space to address increasing future demand.

The consortium, led by the Japanese Toyota Tsusho Corp as well as Bollore Africa Logistics and Nippon Yusen Kaisha, will develop and operate a 600-metre quay and a new 21.2-hectare terminal for the import, export and transshipment of vehicles.

Meantime, the HoR Economic Affairs Committee indicated that there will several direct and indirect benefits from the project.

The direct benefits are the profits from the right to use the terminal, as well as the creation of job opportunities, while the indirect returns are the profits from the docking at the port, the revenues from vehicles passing through the tunnels, as well as taxes, and earnings from energy usage.
