Opposition is growing in Hollywood against the proposed merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, amid warnings about its potential impact on competition in the global entertainment industry.

A large number of film industry figures have signed a petition expressing strong concerns over the deal. Among the signatories are Jane Fonda, Joaquin Phoenix, J. J. Abrams, and Denis Villeneuve.

They warned that the merger could reduce competition in an already highly concentrated media market.

According to Le Monde, around 1,500 industry professionals signed an open letter dated April 13, 2026, rejecting the planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance.

The letter stated that the deal could further concentrate media ownership, leading to fewer opportunities for creators, job losses in production sectors, and higher costs, as well as limiting choices for audiences in the United States and worldwide.

Signatories, including French director Bertrand Bonello, warned that the number of major U.S. studios could drop to four if the merger is approved, raising concerns about reduced investment in film production and broader impacts on an industry that employs tens of thousands, especially in California.

The planned deal follows Skydance’s successful bid over Netflix during acquisition negotiations. If approved by regulators, Skydance would take control of Warner Bros.

Discovery, which owns major franchises such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones.

In response, Paramount Skydance has sought to ease concerns, stating it plans to increase production to at least 30 major films per year for theatrical release, according to a company statement.
