History of AFCON Winners ... SEE Highlights

Thirteen days before the AFCON , SEE explores details of the AFCON's winners since it began in 1957. This tournament is considered the third biggest football event in the world after FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

Egypt topped the list of the teams which managed to achieve this Championship, as the Pharaohs claimed the trophy seven times before. They lifted the cup seven times before in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, and 2010.

Cameroon came in the second position after the Indomitable Lions managed to achieve the title five times before. They achieved their first title in 1984 when Cameroon national team crushed Nigeria with 3-1 in the tournament, which was held in Ivory Coast.

Their second achievement was in 1988 after they managed to beat the Super Falcons again in the final with unanswered one goal. While the Indomitable Lions' third trophy came in 2000 when they won the penalty shootout against Nigeria (4-3).

Two years later in Mali, the Indomitable Lions achieved their fourth title after they won the penalty shootout against Senegal with 3-2, to claim their second consecutive cups.

Fifteen years later, they claimed their fifth title in the 2017 AFCON, which was held in Gabon. They defeated Egypt 2-1 in the final game.

Ghana national team took the third spot as they won four titles during their history in AFCON.

The Black Stars won their first title in 1963 after beating Sudan 3-0 in the tournament, which was held in Ghana. Two years later, Ghana scooped the title when they defeated Tunisia 3-2 in the 1965 AFCON held in Tunisia.

After almost a decade, the Black Stars came back again to achieve their third title in the 1978 tournament which was held in Ghana, after demolishing Uganda 2-0 in the final game.

In the 1982 African Cup of Nations, held in Libya, Ghana achieved its fourth title after winning a dramatic penalty shootout against Libya 7-6.

Nigeria national team managed to win three titles throughout its history in the AFCON. The Super Eagles won their first title in the 1980 tournament hosted by Nigeria after they crushed Algeria 3-0 in the final game.

Fourteen years later, they won their second title in the 1994 Championship hosted by Tunisia. The Super Eagles defeated Zambia 2-1 in the final match.

After almost two decades, Nigeria scooped their in South Africa 2013 AFCON, When they beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final leg.

Ivory Coast scooped the title two times before. The Elephants won their first title in the 1992 tournament held in Senegal after winning a dramatic penalty shootout against Ghana 11-10.

After twenty-three years the Elephants came again to achieve their second title in the 2015 AFCON held in Equatorial Guinea, after securing their victory by winning another dramatic penalty shootout against Ghana 9-8.

DR Congo managed to scoop the title two times before as well. Their first title was in the 1968 AFCON hosted by Ethiopia after they defeated Ghana with unanswered one goal in the final leg. Six years later, the Red Devils scooped their second title in the 1974 Championship hosted by Egypt.

Eight teams managed to lift the cup for only one time in their history. These teams are as follows: Algeria, Congo, Ethiopia, Morocco, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, and Zambia.

It is worth mentioning that Egypt is set to host the upcoming AFCON from 21 June 19 July. The hosts will play the opening match against Zimbabwe on 21 June at Cairo Stadium.
