HBO's supposedly scrapped Jon Snow–centric Game of Thrones sequel is back in early development — but possibly without Jon Snow.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new writer, Quoc Dang Tran, is revising the pitch for the Game of Thrones sequel and adding another fan-favorite character, Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams in the original Game of Thrones series), into the mix.
The news comes alongside the first details of what the proposed Game of Thrones spinoff focusing on Jon Snow would have been about.
Co-developed by Kit Harington, the star who played Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, the series would have seen Jon living alone, a broken man after the conclusion of the original series.
He would spend his days building and then burning down cabins, having already chased Ghost, his direwolf, away and purposefully lost his sword, Longclaw.
It would have reflected Harington's own struggles with mental health following Game of Thrones' wrap, having checked himself into rehab after Season 8 aired.
Nowadays, Harington seems to have definitively moved on from the role, recently saying "god, no" when asked if he'd reprise his role as Jon Snow again.
HBO executives reportedly found the Jon Snow premise too depressing and passed on the series, but sources tell THR that Tran is reformulating plans for the sequel.
One idea currently being considered is moving the show away from Westeros to the neighboring continent of Essos, which is inspired by real-world Mediterranean cultures.
The project would catch up with Arya, the young lady turned assassin, as she explores this territory, having left Westeros behind herself in the Game of Thrones series finale.
The reformulated sequel is still in very early development, with one source telling THR, “We are very interested and excited by the prospect of a sequel but also keenly aware of how high the bar of execution needs to be.”
No actors have signed up for the show yet, including Williams.
In the meantime, there are plenty of other stories set in the world of Game of Thrones for HBO subscribers to enjoy.
The prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has received strong reviews ahead of its premiere on Sunday and has already been renewed for a second season.
"House of the Dragon," another prequel set even further back in the history of Westeros, is headed towards its third season and has already been renewed for a fourth season after that.
