Renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass has called on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah to join a campaign for retrieving the Rosetta Stone from the United Kingdom of Britain 200 years after it was deciphered.
In a recent interview on the TV program "Ala Masoulity" aired on the Sada El Balad channel, the former Minister of Antiquities, requested the help of Mohamed Salah, Liverpool FC player and captain of the Egyptian national team, in restoring looted Egyptian antiquities in England.
Hawass mentioned the iconic Rosetta Stone should be returned home and displayed in the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).
Hawass explained that there is a law in England preventing any antiquities from leaving the country, but if 100,000 signatures are collected, the law can be brought to the House of Commons to be changed.
He also urged Salah to launch a campaign to collect these signatures to restore the Rosetta Stone and other Egyptian smuggled antiquities, noting that Salah's influence could greatly help the cause.
With over 300,000 Egyptians currently residing in England, Hawass believes that collecting 100,000 signatures would be achievable in a short time frame, especially with the full assistance of the Egyptian embassy.
He hopes that Salah will embrace this idea and promote the campaign to help reclaim these important pieces of Egyptian history.
